"Cities Skylines 2" will not be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in October as originally planned. This was announced by the development team Colossal Order in the official forum. The developers are currently unable to name a new release date, but development is continuing.
"Unfortunately, we have not yet reached the stability and performance goals we set for the console version," writes Colossal Order in the forum post. Although the studio is making steady progress, the current version is still plagued by unspecified problems.
A new release candidate is to be tested in August. Colossal Order will then decide whether to consider a new release date. However, if this release candidate still has problems, development could be delayed even further.
It is not known what is wrong with the console port of the city simulation. On the one hand, it is likely to be a challenge to translate the control scheme from mouse and keyboard to the gamepad. On the other hand, "Cities Skylines 2" still runs sluggishly on current high-end processors in PCs - the console port could therefore also fail due to performance problems.

Goodwill squandered
This is not the first time that Colossal Order has had to postpone the release of the console version. Originally, the version for Xbox Series and PS5 was supposed to be released at the same time as the PC version before being postponed to spring 2024. This date became fall - and now there is no date at all. Although Colossal Order states that it is still working on the port, the future of the console version seems very uncertain.
"Cities Skylines 2" was released in poor condition in the fall of 2023. The studio, which had achieved a surprise hit with "Cities Skylines", lost a lot of goodwill in the community as a result. Users are still reporting technical problems. On Steam, only around half of users recommend the purchase of "Cities Skylines 2". Meanwhile, Colossal Order is continuing to work on getting the PC version up to scratch.
