Good day for fans of emulators: Following the iPad version of Delta – albeit not initially available in the EU – UTM SE has finally made it onto Apple platforms. The tool, which has been released in the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro, makes it possible to use older versions of macOS, Windows and Linux as well as various esoteric operating systems. Apple had initially refused to allow the QEMU-based application, but it has now been released after adjustments.

UTM SE is a PC emulator that allows users to run "classic software and old-school games", according to the creators. It is a multi-emulator that can map x86 as well as PowerPC and RISC-V architectures. There are numerous pre-developed "machines" that can be downloaded and installed. Alternatively, it is also possible to build your own emulation, including the greatest possible freedom of configuration.

Windows XP, macOS 9, but also newer systems such as Debian 11, which run as an ARM VM, can be run. The software can be used free of charge and runs from iOS 14 or iPadOS 14. On the Vision Pro, it starts from visionOS 1.0. However, at 1.7 GB, the download is quite large. If the emulation runs unreasonably slowly, you have to go to the settings, which does not always lead to success.

Apple initially refused to allow the app. One of the reasons given was that PC emulations are not consoles, which have been permitted for several months. However, with the help of various partners, including the makers of the AltStore and other developers, the UTM team managed to adapt the code so that Apple granted approval.

The UTM project actually wanted to abandon UTM SE altogether meanwhile, as the user experience was only below average. Apple does not currently allow JIT compilation, for example. However, the issue now seems to be off the table. Incidentally, the "SE" in UTM SE stands for "Slow Edition".
