New standards for NVMe: more AI, more cloud, more computing units

NVMe.org is updating existing standards and creating new ones, focusing on computational storage, i.e. SSDs equipped with integrated computing capabilities.

The standardization organization NVMe.org publishes version 2.1 of its standard for the control of data carriers. It is particularly important for server SSDs because it brings new functions for modern data management. Like version 2.0, it combines all functions in one specification. The most important storage functions include Live Migration, Computational Storage and a new "Host Directed Data Placement" technology

The three new specifications are the NVMe boot specification, the instruction set for the local memory of the subsystem and the instruction set for computational programs. The updates are the NVMe 2.1 base version, the command set specifications (NVM command set, CNS command set, key value command set), the transport specifications (PCIe transport, Fibre Channel transport, RDMA transport and TCP transport) and the NVMe management interface specification.

Key features include live migration of PCIe NVMe controllers between NVM subsystems and support for offloading some host tasks to NVMe storage devices. In addition, servers can now also boot via NVMe-of (over fabrics, i.e. networks) and access Zoned Namespaces. Furthermore, the organization cites the possibility of host management of encryption keys and highly granular encryption with Key Per-I/O as well as support for TLS 1.3 and a centralized authentication verification instance for DH-HMAC-CHAP as important updates.

"NVMe technology, which began with a single PCIe SSD specification, has now grown to nearly a dozen specifications, including multiple instruction sets that support NVMe technology across all major transport media and standardize many aspects of storage," said Peter Onufryk, Chairman of the NVM Express Technical Workgroup. "The adoption of NVMe technology continues to grow and has succeeded in unifying client, cloud, AI and enterprise storage on a common architecture. The future of NVMe technology is bright and we have 75 new authorized technical proposals in the works." The NVM Express specifications and the specifications of the new features are available for download on the NVM Express website.
