Pitt-Clooney film from Apple: Cinema screenings canceled
If streamers want to have a chance of winning an "Oscar", their films must also be shown in cinemas. But now Apple TV+ is to save money on a new potential hit.
"Wolfs" is coming in September.

If a film studio wants to win the Academy Award ("Oscar") for "Best Picture", it must fulfill an important requirement: The submission must have been shown in theaters in major markets for at least one week. Of course, this also applies to streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ or Apple TV+, even if the main audience ultimately only sees a film online. It will be the same with Apple's next hoped-for Hollywood hit, the production "Wolfs" with stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt. However, the company had originally wanted to be even more prominent in cinemas. But this has now been canceled.
Short visit to the cinema
As the film trade website Deadline reports, there will now only be a "limited theatrical run" for "Wolfs". The original plan was to release the film in large, medium and even small markets from September 20 ("wide theatrical release"). The film will then be available to watch on Apple TV+ from September 27. Apple confirmed the change. The background to this initially remained unclear. However, interest in the action-espionage thriller was not low in the run-up to the premiere, which is planned for the Venice Film Festival.

However, Apple has had comparatively bad experiences with other productions with wide releases in cinemas, such as "Napoleon" and "Killers of the Flower Moon" - despite a star-studded cast. The Formula 1 drama "F1", in which Pitt can also be seen in the leading role, is to receive a wide release as planned. "The Instigators" with Matt Damon also had a limited release. "Wolfs" is a production of Apple Original Films, but was filmed by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Apple is said to have already ordered a second film, also starring Clooney and Pitt.
Better for Apple TV+ subscribers
From the point of view of an Apple TV+ subscriber, Apple's decision is actually a good one: the original plan was for "Wolfs" to run in cinemas for a month before being sold/rented as a video-on-demand film. The film would then probably not have arrived on the streaming platform until November.

With the limited release, however, Apple can now submit the film to the "Oscars" and also save money - because the theatrical screening is expensive unless it is financed by sufficient ticket sales.
