The teaser trailer recently released by Disney for the next "Toy Story" part looked very familiar to X-users. As it turns out, not without good reason.

"Toy Story" was an absolute milestone for cinema - and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs: the children's film about toys that came to life , released in 1995, was the first animated film created entirely on a computer and a huge hit at the box office. After years of losses, it finally made Pixar, the studio behind it obsessed with Jobs, a success.

Pixar is now part of Disney - and some critics believe that the creative spark has been somewhat lost. This can be seen in the short teaser trailer for "Toy Story 5", which is planned for summer 2026: As one developer has noted, Pixar is making almost one-to-one use of animations that had already been brought to the Apple Watch by Apple in 2017 (!).

"Toy Story 5" was announced at the Disney "fan event" D23, a conference that ended on Sunday in Anaheim, California. There weren't many details, just the hint that popular characters such as Woody, Buzz, Jessie "and the gang" will return. However, the footage used in the 25-second teaser trailer looked somewhat familiar to some users. The characters, who appear in front of a "Toy Story 5" logo (with "Disney Pixar" above it) to typical "Toy Story" music, briefly greet the viewer by moving very close to the virtual camera.

However, the material itself consists almost entirely of animated watch faces with "Toy Story" characters, which Apple introduced for watchOS 4 seven years ago. Pixar has cropped these, which can be clearly seen in the teaser trailer because it contains image errors.

This was first spotted by an intern at Apple, of all people. Developer Dylan McDonald was able to directly compare the teaser trailer and Apple Watch dials - which still exist on the watch - in a video.

So far, it is unclear why Pixar has used its old assets to create a "new" video. Of course, Pixar owns this content and can do whatever the Disney subsidiary wants with it. Nevertheless, it shows that the studio has apparently lost a little creativity. Let's hope that at least the first real trailer for "Toy Story 5" is based on original material.
