Hope lives on forever: iMac with 27 or 30 inches remains on Apple's agenda
Apple's popular All-in-One desktop is still without a second version. Now there are more rumors - and probably more waiting.

Ever since Apple overhauled its iMac in May 2021 with an M1 SoC and a new, colorful look, interested parties have been waiting for a second version to be released. But nothing has happened. Although the iMac M3 was released last fall, it only had an improved interior. The 24-inch form factor did not change; users are still waiting for a 27-inch version, as was once known from Intel iMacs. However, the project has allegedly not been completely forgotten at Apple. At least that's what the well-known Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman claims in his latest newsletter.
Not with M4, but with M5?
As he writes, the larger iMac is something that Apple is "investigating further". However, it is unclear whether this is a product with an M4 SoC – "or something that will be released next year or later". As a reminder: Apple is probably planning a whole series of new Macs with the current M4 SoC for the fall, which is currently only found in a tablet version in the iPad Pro. New MacBook Pro models, iMacs and a completely redesigned Mac mini for the first time in 14 years are planned for October. MacBook Air, Mac Pro and Mac Studio will supposedly follow in 2025 - whether with M4 or then M5 is unclear.
If you share Gurman's assessment, the first "large" iMac is also unlikely to arrive until next year at the earliest. There was previously speculation that Apple would go from 27 to 30 inches. However, rumors have been circulating on the Apple scene since 2022 and nothing has happened since then.

No technical difficulty
Apple would hardly face any major difficulties with a large iMac with Apple Silicon. The form factor would just have to be adapted accordingly. It would probably be easiest to use the familiar 5K display, which is also used in the Studio Display. Although it is no longer the most modern (it lacks HDR support, for example), it is considered to be of high quality. However, Apple would first have to find a suitable 30-inch panel.
Anyone who asks in a sales meeting today what could replace an old Intel iMac with 27 inches will be told by Apple to treat themselves to a combination of the aforementioned Studio Display and Mac Studio. However, the price is significantly higher than the all-in-one machine once was.
