Apple's strong commitment to the subcontinent appears to be a success: According to Indian government officials, no company has grown so quickly in the past 50 years. Revenue is set to rise to 23.5 billion US dollars in the 2024 fiscal year, up from 13.9 billion dollars in the previous year, they said. Apple has now increased its Indian business twenty-fold, including manufacturers, writes the Economic Times.
iPhone 16 Pro straight from India
Apple will also start producing its top smartphone models in India this year. As the financial news agency Bloomberg reports, Apple's most important iPhone manufacturer is to assemble the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in a large factory in Tamil Nadu in southern India before the end of this year. The countries to which the devices will be exported in addition to the local market initially remained unclear.
Currently, China is still the most important production location, where Foxconn is also the leading manufacturer. However, Apple has been trying for years to reduce its dependence on the People's Republic. Most recently, it was announced in spring that every seventh iPhone would allegedly be "Assembled in India". At that time, however, there was no mention of the high-end Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are now to be built in Tamil Nadu "within weeks" of the sales launch in September. Thousands of workers are currently being trained for this. The devices should also be manufactured in India "as close as possible" to the global launch of the iPhone 16, it was said. This would be an important step for Apple, according to Bloomberg, considering that Indian production has only really started to pick up speed in 2021.

Dual strategy as in China
Apple is pursuing a dual strategy in India, as it did years ago in China. The company wants to turn the world's most populous country into an important production location - the second most important after the People's Republic – while also winning the sales market. Up to 14 percent of all iPhones are now said to be produced in India, with exports reaching 15 billion dollars last year. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of market share, which currently stands at around 6 percent. iPhones are increasingly becoming a status symbol in the country.
Bloomberg reports that Apple will offer Indian devices for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus from the start of sales. In addition to Foxconn, Pegatron and Tata are also to be involved in the production of the Pro variants. None of the companies commented on the report. Most recently, there had been disputes about possible discrimination against married women at a Foxconn plant in India.
