Nvidia launches GeForce RTX 4070 with slower memory
A new variant of the GeForce RTX 4070 uses GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X RAM. It is unclear to what extent it will be possible to differentiate between the versions.

Nvidia is launching a second version of the GeForce RTX 4070, albeit without a separate name. It uses GDDR6 memory chips instead of the previous GDDR6X RAM. The transfer rate is reduced from 21 gigabits per second and pin to 20 Gbps. This results in a total of around 480 GByte/s instead of 504 GByte/s –, a drop of just under 5 percent.
According to Nvidia's announcement, the remaining features remain unchanged. Both variants of the GeForce RTX 4070 normally use the AD103 GPU from the Ada-Lovelace generation with 5888 active shader cores and a boost clock frequency of nominally 2480 MHz. Nvidia also continues to put the maximum power consumption at 200 watts.

In practice, the switch to GDDR6 memory could have a minimal impact on the boost behavior because these components require slightly less electrical power than GDDR6X chips. This means that the GPU has slightly more power budget available. However, this should not have too great an impact.
Nvidia writes in its own announcement for the GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6: "It offers similar performance in games and applications."
From September at unknown prices
The new GeForce RTX 4070 will be available from manufacturer partners from September 2024. Nvidia remains silent on the price. Previous RTX 4070 graphics cards are available from around 540 euros. In the worst case scenario, the new 4070s will cost the same as the GDDR6X models.
On the product page, Nvidia lists both variants of the GeForce RTX 4070 in the same table column. The versions can therefore only be distinguished by name if the card manufacturers themselves point this out.
According to previous rumors, Nvidia is also launching the GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 because GDDR6X memory could be temporarily in short supply. Micron is the sole supplier of the components and is said to have had quality problems with one batch.
