Revised Voice Memos app: New for musicians, but only with iPhone 16 Pro
Apple has significantly upgraded its popular Voice Memos app. However, only the most expensive iPhone is not missing any functions.

Users use Apple's standard Voice Memos app for many things – from recording lectures and interviews to collecting musical ideas. As part of the release of the new iPhone models this week, Apple is delivering various new functions for the application. These include a transcription function in (initially) English, but also a new multitrack recording. However, the feature is apparently only available on the two most expensive new iPhones: 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, which are sold from 1199 euros.
Simple principle, but with track isolation
The new overdub functionality makes it possible to add another track to existing recordings – of a musical instrument –, for example. Voice memos should be able to play back the first track, but only record the new signal –, for example vocals –. Advanced processing filters out what comes through the loudspeaker. In addition, the four microphones in the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are said to enable "professional studio sound".

The company emphasizes that it is not necessary to wear headphones. In this way, songs can be built up step by step and later edited. In a demo video shown at the Apple keynote last Monday, Apple demonstrated this with a musician.
A18 Pro necessary, A18 is not enough
Apparently, Apple's reason for limiting the product to the Pro models is that post-processing requires at least an A18 Pro. The new SoC comes with one more GPU core (after all), and the audio system has been improved in the Pro models and the four microphones mentioned above have been installed to enable better voice and vocal recordings.
However, reserving functions for certain models only is by no means a new development for Apple. The company likes to differentiate between Pro and standard models. This year, the standard models will again only come with USB 2.0, the Pro models with USB 3.0. The display of the standard models has been refreshed with 60 Hertz, the Pro models with 120 Hertz. Some iOS update functions are also reserved for newer iPhones.
