iOS 18.1 to 18.4: How Apple is planning the rollout of Apple Intelligence
It is already known that Apple Intelligence will not be launched before iOS 18.1. But even after that, progress with the AI system for iPhones will be gradual.

Apple Intelligence will not yet be active with the release of the iPhone 16 in its four versions next Friday. Instead, Apple is planning a (very) gradual rollout of its AI system, which will by no means be completed with iOS 18.1. Instead, it will probably take until spring 2025 or even longer for all the announced features to be available. In Europe, however, things look even worse: Here, due to Apple's fear of being regulated by the Digital Markets Act (DMA) at Apple Intelligence, not even a rough release schedule has been set.
Step by step outside the EU
First of all, Apple will present iOS 18.1 in October – and thus the first version of iOS with the first Apple Intelligence functions. This means that anyone who buys an iPhone 16 in the USA will not get the AI system from the start and will have to wait for the update. iOS 18.1 includes new writing tools for rewriting, correcting or summarizing text, reply suggestions in the Messages and email app and summaries of notifications in Mail, Messages and third-party apps.

A new "Clean Up" tool for the Photos app is included, as well as the recording and transcription of phone calls in English. Also announced are new AI-based "reviews" in the Photos app, a new focus mode that will automatically display only important messages and summaries in Safari's reading mode. The voice assistant Siri will only receive some of the features promised by Apple, including the new animation and (better) understanding of follow-up questions – and the option to correct questions.
iOS 18.2 to 18.4: The big AI finale is still to come
iOS 18.2 is expected later this year, probably in December. This will include the image generator functions that Apple announced back in the summer. This refers to the so-called Image Playground, which can be used to create illustrations and comic-like images via text prompts and from photo templates, as well as the Genmoji function, which allows you to create your own emojis via a prompt. If iOS 18.2 remains this year and no further updates are released, ChatGPT support for Siri, which has been announced for this year, will probably also be released at this time.
This will be followed by iOS 18.3 and 18.4, which are expected between the beginning of the year and spring. It is unclear whether iOS 18.3 will contain new AI features – iOS 18.4 should, however, finally contain the real "new Siri". This means that it will be able to recognize the personal context, i.e. understand system-wide searches, read the screen and control apps to a greater extent. New languages for Apple Intelligence are also not expected before 2025. So far, Apple has only announced French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese – There is not even any mention of German for Switzerland, which should officially receive Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.1.
