In spring 2024, software manufacturer Adobe added an AI assistant to its Acrobat PDF software, which initially only processed English-language content. It is now available in German. The chatbot can be used to summarize documents, revise meeting minutes or discuss queries.

In addition to PDF documents, Acrobat's AI assistant should also be able to process documents from Word and PowerPoint as well as text files and thus help with the quick understanding of long texts in particular.

For example, the AI should be able to help find sources and verify content. As a generative summary, users receive an overview of the title line and the most important content points of a document. Users can also compare documents with each other and extract content for use in emails or presentations.

Adobe ensures that no user data is used for training or fine-tuning its large language models (LLM). According to Adobe, the data is encrypted both on the server and during transfer in accordance with the SHA-256 standard.

To activate an AI function, users must click on "AI Assistant" or "Generative Summary". The AI assistant can also be completely deactivated.

Users can delete their chat history, which is accessed by the AI assistant. Only the requester can see the generated answers. This also applies to shared documents. Adobe uses Microsoft's Azure OpenAI service for the AI function. According to the contract, this may not be fed with Adobe user data. The AI only accesses the document in question, i.e. it does not use external sources such as the web, emails or locally stored databases. The service also filters out hate messages as well as sexual and violent content.

According to Adobe, the AI assistant is now available in the Acrobat PDF applications on the desktop, on the web and in the mobile apps for Android and iOS. This applies to both the free reader and the paid editor. In both cases, the AI function costs an additional 5.99 euros per month. (akr)
