Apple has announced the availability of the second major version of its classical music app Apple Music Classical. With Update 2.0, which has been available in the App Store since this week, the provider is further expanding its content offering and providing users with a wealth of additional material that was previously only available on analog records and CDs.
Browse details with booklets
Apple Music Classical was launched in March 2023 and is part of Apple Music, meaning it costs nothing extra for users who pay €10.99 per month or €109 per year. The idea behind the application is to give users who appreciate classical music of all genres their own app home. On iPhone and –, and since last November – also iPad, you can get a much better overview of what Apple Music offers here – including editorial and algorithmically curated information on new releases, tips and more.

With Apple Music Classical 2.0, Apple says it has now digitized over 50,000 album booklets and integrated them into its offering. This means that you can no longer just read the content that is listed as standard –, such as the individual movements of symphonies, composers, performers and brief ratings –, but can also browse through the booklets, which are otherwise only available in analog form. These can be found by clicking on a "book" icon, provided they are already available. The contents are often multilingual and contain information on orchestras and soloists, biographies, sometimes even lyrics and much more.
New quick access
The booklets are displayed directly in the Apple Music Classical app –, where they are also loaded; there are no plans to open them in other apps, nor to export them. Navigation is via the respective booklet page plus zoom function; this is not extremely convenient.
Another new function in Apple Music Classical 2.0 relates to navigation. There is now the "Recently added" feature within the library, which allows you to find albums recently added to the library, which was previously not available in quick access. This content can be found directly under the library items in the corresponding tab. Apple has still not implemented another long-cherished wish: downloads of classical music directly in the Apple Music Classical app are still not provided for; you have to switch to Apple Music for this.
