iMac M1: Reports of display defects
There are reports circulating in forums that the display of All-in-One Macs with M1 fails after a few years. It remains unclear whether it is a series defect.

There are currently an increasing number of reports from owners of the iMac M1 about malfunctions on the display of the all-in-one computer with Apple Silicon, which was released in 2021. There is a 17 page long thread in the official Apple support forum, which states that there are "permanent horizontal lines on the screen" that make it impossible to use. There should be no externally visible physical damage. It does not appear to be a software problem or a GPU problem – an external screen continues to run unnoticed.
Error occurs one and a half to two years after purchase
Those affected are said to have discovered the fault between one and a half and two years after purchase, which may mean that the machine is out of warranty. Apple itself seems to react in different ways: Sometimes the manufacturer repairs the iMac accommodatingly, but sometimes it demands hundreds of euros for the display replacement. First reports emerged as early as 2023.
According to Macrumors, the problem initially causes heating in the upper right-hand corner of the display before the image malfunction occurs. It remains unclear how many customers are affected in total. An iMac M1 in the Mac & i editorial office, which was purchased shortly after the start of sales, has not yet exhibited the problem.

No exchange program planned so far
Apple normally launches hardware replacement programs for serial defects. These often last for years and allow a free repair – or a cash refund for repairs already carried out. However, there is currently no such service program in sight for the iMac M1. Apple has not yet publicly acknowledged the display problem. Affected users can therefore only hope to get in touch with an accommodating service employee – or swallow the toad of the replacement, for which a cost estimate should definitely be requested.
The iMac M1 was the first all-in-one Mac with Apple Silicon. Its successor, the iMac M3, is now available. It was released in 2023 and does not differ from its predecessor in terms of form factor, but offers a faster processor. There are still no reports of screen malfunctions with this model.
