iPhone 16: Spatial audio for better video sound
Apple has tweaked the sound of the iPhone 16's microphones thanks to computational audio. You can now select different profiles for video recordings.

A new feature of the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max is hardly known yet: the ability to record the sound of videos with different sound variants, which can also be adjusted afterwards. The devices use spatial sound (Spatial Audio) with up to four integrated microphones in the iPhone, which should now deliver "Studio Sound" in the Pro models, as Apple writes.
Four different audio mix modes
In addition to the previous options of recording audio in stereo or mono, Spatial Audio – can now be activated in the camera app settings. Stereo and spatial audio sound are also automatically provided with a wind filter on the iPhone 16 (which can be turned off). Finally, spatial audio videos can be edited after recording. This is done using the audio mix function in the Photos app. There are a total of four possible options here: Standard (sounds as recorded), "In-Frame", "Studio" and "Cinematic" (cinema sound). Audio Mix recognizes when someone is speaking and distinguishes between foreground and background sound.

If you select "In-Frame", the voices of the people who can currently be seen are emphasized. "Studio" promises a sound like in a "professional studio with sound insulation". This is "perfect for vlogs and podcasts", writes Apple – It's as if the microphone is close to your mouth. "Finally, "Cinematic" records all the voices around the person filming and brings them together close to the screen – as if "mixed for the movies", according to Apple. The effect can be adjusted using a slider to separate the foreground and background.
Special function only for iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max
In addition to the audio mix, which is available on all new iPhones, there is also a new feature in the Voice Memo app on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. There is now a new multitrack recording feature that makes it possible to mix tracks together.
The system can separate voice recordings from background sounds, making it possible to record voices while background music is playing. Headphones are not necessary for this. According to Apple, it has noticed how many musicians are already using voice memos.
