"Underwater": German star director Berger films for Vision Pro
Edward Berger won the Oscar for best foreign film. Now he has filmed a (short) submarine drama for spatial computing for Apple.

Vision Pro users get more immersive movies: On Thursday evening, Apple released "Submerged", its most complex production for the headset to date. In 17 minutes, you can follow the adventures of American submariners in World War II – in high-resolution 3D including spatial audio. The film also comes from a competent source: Edward Berger, director of "Nothing New in the West" and Oscar winner for best foreign film, is the director.
Shot in a 23-ton submarine
In "Submerged", Vision Pro users follow the submarine crew as they deal with a deadly torpedo attack. This is somewhat reminiscent of "Das Boot", but thanks to the implementation it is much more modern and almost interactive. This allows the user to look around and feel like they are "right in the middle of it" – but the camera work is designed in such a way that it doesn't make you feel sick.

According to Apple marketing manager Tor Myhren, this makes new forms of media possible. "Vision Pro puts you right in the middle of the story – here in a tightly packed submarine, shoulder to shoulder with its crew. This deep sense of immersion was simply not possible before." According to Apple, Berger shows "the next generation of narrative filmmaking". The company has put together a "making of" clip to show exactly how the filming took place.
Free immersives for all users
As with Apple's previous immersive content, "Submerged" is also available free of charge in the TV app under visionOS. The offer is to be constantly expanded. A film about the NBA All-Star Weekend 2024 will be released next Friday, while The Weeknd will perform in an immersive music experience for his new album in November.

Further episodes of the "Adventures" series will follow in December and spring 2025, featuring sport climbers and freedivers, among others. There will also be more concert content and aerial shots as part of the "Elevated" show. So far, the immersives have been produced as short films –, firstly because of the cost, but also because the format is still so new to users. It is higher resolution than what is available on other headsets. Apple had previously presented animal films and a tightrope walk across a Norwegian fjord, as well as sports videos (soccer) and parcours artists in Paris.
