Apple: Long-time hardware manager retires
Apple loses an important manager: Former head of hardware engineering Dan Riccio recently worked on the Vision Pro. A supply chain manager is also leaving.

Anyone who has followed Apple's keynote presentations for many years will know Dan Riccio: The former SVP of Hardware Engineering often demonstrated the intricacies of new Macs and other products. The manager had been with the company since 1998. He stepped down as SVP in 2021, but then took care of a secret project – in line with Apple's usual succession strategy: the Vision Pro. However, it is now on the market and Riccio can really retire. This was reported by the financial news agency Bloomberg.
He wanted to leave five years ago
Riccio was a "key manager in both the Jobs and Cook eras", it says. His job in the headset department will be taken over by head of hardware John Ternus, who some observers see as a candidate to succeed Cook. Riccio most recently reported directly to Tim Cook. He will leave Apple in October. Mike Rockwell, Riccio's deputy, will take over the day-to-day running of the headset group ("Vision Products Group").

Riccio was not always successful. He was once tasked with coordinating the Group's car project, which was later abandoned. In his career as SVP from 2012 – as successor to Bob Mansfield – many well-known products were launched: the first iPhones with a larger screen, the iPad Pro, the AirPods, the switch to Apple Silicon. Riccio recently spoke at MIT and stated that he would soon be "winding down" his career. He had actually wanted to do this five years ago. Big tech companies should not shy away from risks, he said, as he learned from Cook and his "old boss Steve".
There are also changes in the supply chain
In addition to Riccio, another Apple veteran is also leaving the company. Dan Roschkes, Head of Global Supply Chain Procurement, is leaving after another 24 years. He was responsible for finding suitable suppliers for Apple's products and components – a very critical position. Most recently, however, there was a TikTok affair in his department in 2022 involving a top management colleague, who then had to leave.
Roschkes' successor will be David Tom, who is currently his second in command. Without a well-functioning supply chain, Apple cannot keep up with its product pace.
