With cosmetic products: Apple brings cleaning instructions for AirPods
AirPods and AirPods Pro have relatively delicate mesh grille covers. However, they can be cleaned with a toothbrush and special care, Apple reveals.

Micellar water? Only people who regularly apply make-up will know what it is: a liquid with a special additive that can be used to remove make-up more easily. "It consists of particles made up of cleansing molecules aggregated in the form of spheroids in fresh water. These particles are called micelles," you can read on the Nivea website, for example. What else do you need the product for? To clean AirPods. At least that's what Apple reveals in two videos recently published on YouTube.
Children's toothbrush, Hâ‚‚O distillate and micelles
While the outer areas of the earplugs should be cleaned with a slightly damp soft cloth, the mesh grilles, which house the microphones and audio drivers, among other things, are a little more complicated. Apple recommends micellar water from Bioderma or Neutrogena, which "contains PEG-6 caprylic/capringlycerides". You will also need distilled water, a paper towel, a soft children's toothbrush and two cups.
The process: first pour the micelle water into the cup, then "completely" wet the bristles of the toothbrush and hold the AirPods with the respective grid facing upwards. Then use "circular movements for about 15 seconds". Then dab (paper towel should be in contact with the grid) and brush twice more (up to three times). The micellar water is then rinsed off with the brush dipped in distillate, also for a maximum of 15 seconds with circular movements, but only once. The AirPods should then be left to dry for two hours (before charging or using them again).

Cleaning set for 15 euros as an alternative
Apple has published video instructions in English for AirPods 3 and 4 as well as AirPods Pro; text-only information is also available in German. The drying phase and the most careful approach to cleaning are particularly important. Alternatively, you can also consider purchasing the official cleaning set from Belkin for AirPods, which costs just under 15 euros.
This includes a cleaning fluid (including deionized water), a brush and a cleaning cloth. If you still have suitable water at home, you can also use the cosmetics cabinet.
