Charger for iPhone and Apple Watch: Recall due to high heat development
The Belkin BoostCharge Pro BPD005 can overheat under "certain circumstances" and pose a fire risk. The manufacturer is taking it back.

The Foxconn subsidiary Belkin has published a warning for owners of a certain power bank from the manufacturer: The BoostCharge Pro in the dual-charger version with the model number BPD005, which contains a 10,000 mAh battery, can overheat and, in the worst case, cause a fire. For this reason, a "voluntary product recall" is being issued, the company writes in a warning PDF on its website. Buyers known to Belkin are also currently being contacted by email.

The affected BoostCharge Pro should not be confused with other models in the range, which are available as triple chargers and charging stands, among others. Only the power bank is affected, which can supply the Apple Watch with power wirelessly via an integrated charging puck and an iPhone or other USB-C device via cable. The BoostCharge Pro costs around 110 euros in stores, but is currently not available.
The background to this is that it appears to be a series problem. "Due to a manufacturing defect, the lithium cell component of the portable wireless battery charger may overheat under certain circumstances and pose a fire risk to consumers," writes Belkin. So far, however, "no injuries have been reported". Other Belkin wireless chargers or other Belkin products are not affected by the recall.

Do not send for recycling
Anyone who has the device in their household should take it out of service and disconnect it from all power sources and products. The device should then be stored "in a safe, dry place away from flammable materials or other things that could damage the power bank". You should not attempt to dispose of the power bank yourself – Belkin wants to send instructions to those affected.
The company has published a form on its website for this purpose, which can also be used to request a refund. The power bank has plenty of juice with the aforementioned 10,000 mAh and could charge an iPhone up to twice and an Apple Watch up to 14 times with up to 20 watts via USB-C PD 3.0. You should therefore handle it with care. The serial number, which can be found here, must be provided during the return process.
