iPad mini 7: New buyers need an update

Apple will launch the new seventh-generation iPad mini on the market today, Wednesday. It will be delivered to the first customers by post and can also be purchased in Apple stores; a look at the quantities on Apple.com shows that this is still possible in many cases when stores open at 10 a.m., for example in Berlin. However, buyers will have a small task right after purchase: The operating system supplied with the compact tablets is not up-to-date. This is because Apple published a special version of iPadOS 18.0.1 on Tuesday, which contains important bug fixes.
Crash bug fixed
Among other things, the update fixes a – fortunately rare – crash bug that can send the Messages app into a crash loop when an Apple Watch face is split in a certain way. Two security vulnerabilities have also been fixed. One caused passwords from the Passwords app to be read aloud by VoiceOver in an unwanted manner, while the other allowed the Messages app to record a few seconds of audio before displaying the microphone indicator.

The build number of iPadOS 18.0.1 for the iPad mini 7 is 22A8380. This is the same build as iPadOS 18.0.1, which was released for other tablet models at the beginning of October. Apple guides new users of the iPad mini through the update process the first time they start it, which extends the setup time slightly. It is also important so that the iPad remains compatible –, for example, if you want to import a backup of your old iPad mini that is already running iPadOS 18.0.1.
Updates for iPhones in the box
With the iPad mini, it is apparently not yet possible to update the device in the box. The so-called in-store updates have been possible for iPhones since spring –, at least from series 15 onwards. Any available updates are installed wirelessly via a special Apple device, which makes the set-up process easier for customers because they can always work with the latest operating system.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that Apple's professional iPad apps Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro will also run on the iPad mini 7 – thanks to the faster A17 Pro chip. However, Apple is still leaving out the Stage Manager function on the compact tablet, which should make it less convenient to use. The iPad mini 7 is sold from 599 euros and now has at least 128 GB of flash memory ex works.
