Apple Intelligence: What is missing and what is coming – and, above all, when
Apple will launch iOS 18.1 & Co. on Monday – with Apple Intelligence for the first time. But the range of functions is initially limited. That is the plan.

Apple is expected to make iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 available for download from this evening Central European Time. In addition to minor improvements to the systems, the main innovation is that Apple Intelligence, first presented at the WWDC developer conference in June, will be released to the public. The whole of Apple Intelligence? No. This is because Apple has announced its strategy of gradually rolling out the AI system. Accordingly, only individual functions can be seen from today. In addition, a geo-block has been implemented for the European Union, but this does not affect all platforms. Here you can read what to expect and what is still to come.
Only accessible with a US account
Apple Intelligence will initially only be available to EU citizens on the Mac once macOS 15.2 has been installed. iPhone and iPad are regulated under the Digital Market Act (DMA), which makes Apple fear that the EU Commission could interfere with the company's AI features –, so Europeans will have to stay outside until negotiations are concluded. iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 only offer Apple Intelligence if the system is set to US English, the region is set to USA and a US account is stored in the App Store (this does not apply to iCloud, however). At least Apple has now removed a hard geo-restriction for Apple Intelligence, which was still included in the first beta.

In the first AI round, the systems come with four different features. The Writing Tools can be used to rewrite, summarize and correct texts and are available system-wide. In future, notifications will be intelligently combined on request and the content of emails and notifications will be summarized in one sentence. The system also offers Smart Replies with suggested responses to messages. Finally, you can now use the voice assistant Siri better and correct or restart queries in a sentence.
"Really good" Siri and other languages not until 2025
However, the completely new Siri with personal context will not arrive until later. When answering questions, it will refer less often to the web, know the address book, emails, messages or the schedule and finally also access screen content. However, this is not expected before iOS 18.3 or even 18.4, which are expected in spring. Apple has already shown what this will look like as part of an advertising campaign. iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 include "Memory Movies", which generate movies and slideshows from photos in the media library on prompt. macOS 15.1 is not covered.
The image generators Genmoji and Image Playground including Image Wand are coming with iOS 18.2. A limited beta test is currently running among developers with a waiting list. iOS 18.2 also brings ChatGPT support for Siri to the device, which even includes text generation and image generation. Genmoji is not yet planned for macOS 15.2. Other Apple Intelligence features that will come later include sorting notifications by importance and support for additional languages. These include German, which is not expected before spring 2025 –, as well as French, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese.
