AMD Ryzen 7 9700X tested: More economical, but only moderately faster
The Zen 5 eight-core starts with a moderate increase in performance, but is beaten by the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in games. It requires less energy in idle mode.
Due to unspecified quality problems, AMD has brought forward the launch of the Ryzen 9000 processors and split them up. The Ryzen 5 9600X with six and the Ryzen 7 9700X with eight Zen 5 cores will go on sale tomorrow, August 8. One week later, on August 15, the top model Ryzen 9 9950X with 16 CPU cores and the 12-core Ryzen 9 9900X will follow.
AMD gave us the opportunity to test the eight-core Ryzen 7 9700X in advance. We compared it with the Ryzen 7 7700 from the previous generation because both have the same thermal budget of 65 watts. In addition to the new Zen 5 architecture, the Ryzen 9700X also clocks up to 200 MHz faster in Turbo mode. This means that the Ryzen 7 9700X calculates around 16 percent faster than its Zen 4 counterpart in the single-threaded rating of the Cinebench 2024 rendering benchmark. When all cores are under load, the power limit is limited so that the lead over the Ryzen 7 7700 shrinks to eight percent.

The Ryzen 7 9700X achieves the greatest increase in floating point (FP) operations. Because the Zen 5 architecture now processes AVX512 instructions in one clock cycle, the computing power doubles to 1.3 TFLOPS with twice the precision. However, because only a few application programs use AVX512, performance usually only increases by 5 to 16 percent.
Ryzen 7 7800X3D further ahead in games
In 3D games, the Zen 5 eight-core has to admit defeat to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D with additional stacked level 3 cache despite its improvements. With a GeForce RTX 4090, the frame rate at Full-HD resolution with the Ryzen 7 9700X is 5 to 20 percent behind the X3D CPU with the predecessor architecture, depending on the title. Gamers should therefore wait for the Ryzen 9000X3D, which is expected in the coming months.

Thanks to the improved TSMC N4 production technology instead of N5, the Zen 5 processor calculates more efficiently and also requires less energy in idle mode. On the Asus TUF Gaming X670E-Plus AM5 motherboard we used, the Ryzen 7 9700X consumed 38 watts, which is 8 watts less than the Ryzen 7 7700.

AMD makes the Zen 5 eight-core processor expensive with a recommended retail price of 399 euros. The Ryzen 7 9700X therefore costs around 100 euros more than the Ryzen 7 7700 currently costs in stores, but only offers significant performance advantages over its predecessor in single-threaded applications.
A comprehensive test of the Ryzen 9000, including a detailed analysis of the Zen 5 architecture, will follow as soon as we have received and tested the other models.
