AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Core Ultra 200V get Copilot+ in November
AMD's Ryzen AI 300 has a powerful AI unit, but it has been lying dormant until now. Microsoft will not release Copilot+ until November.

Microsoft has announced a Windows 11 update for notebooks with current processors from AMD and Intel: In November, it will release Copilot+ functions that run locally with the integrated AI units in the processors. This affects AMD's Ryzen AI 300 and Intel's recently introduced Core Ultra 200V aka Lunar Lake.
Early users of a notebook with Ryzen AI 300 in particular will have to be patient: AMD presented the CPU family in July 2024, and notebooks with it have been available since August. This means it will be more than three months before the advertised functions are available.
Only with the current processor generation
At the Computex technology trade fair, AMD boss Lisa Su joked: "You're always pushing us to give you more. You always say: 'More TOPS, Lisa, more TOPS'. What are you doing with all these TOPS? [...] By the way, it takes a lot of chip space, just so you know."
TOPS stands for Tera Operations per Second, i.e. trillions of computing operations per second. Microsoft requires 40 TOPS for Copilot+. In addition to the Ryzen AI 300 and Core Ultra 200V, Qualcomm's ARM processors Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus can achieve this. The AI functions have been running on the latter since June.
AMD has a second requirement for AI functions to run locally: Notebook manufacturers must activate the AI unit (Neural Processing Unit, NPU) in their firmware. Otherwise, Windows will not "see" it at all.
AI functions in Windows 11
Meanwhile, AMD and Intel notebooks get the same Copilot+ functions as Qualcomm devices:
- Live transcription of conversations, including translation
- Windows Studio effects, such as blurred backgrounds in video conferences
- Co-Creator in Paint (generated images based on a Paint drawing)
- Restyle Image and Image Creator in the Windows Photo Viewer app
Restyle works like more complex filters for photos. For example, you can make a selfie look like an oil painting. Image Creator generates images locally – but is currently not comparable with tools such as Midjourney and DALL-E.
