Despite calls from the automotive industry and politicians to soften the targets of the Green Deal or postpone the end of the combustion engine, Volvo is sticking to its ambitious goal of converting at least 90 percent of global sales to electric cars and plug-in hybrid models by 2030. In Germany, Volvo offers at least one plug-in hybrid or battery-electric drive in every model series.
The German result is based on a significant global increase in sales of electrified Volvos. In 2024, Volvo Cars sold 175,194 battery-electric cars, an increase of 54Â percent compared to 2023, and 177,593 plug-in hybrids, an increase of 16Â percent compared to 2023. 46 percent of all Volvos sold worldwide in 2024 were electrified. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 23Â percent of these, compared to 16 percent in 2023.
In Europe, Volvo sold 369,685 cars, an increase of 25 percent compared to 2023. The range of electrified models – battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models – accounted for 65 percent of all cars sold there.
Declines in the USA and China
Volvo Cars' US sales amounted to 125,243 cars in 2024, a decrease of three percent compared to the full year 2023. The number of electrified models sold increased by 20Â percent, accounting for 34Â percent of all Volvos sold in the US in 2024.
Sales in China fell by eight percent compared to 2023, corresponding to 156,370 cars sold. Overall, sales of electrified models increased by three percent in the period from January to December.
In 2024, the Volvo XC60 was the best-selling model with 230,853 units (2023: 228,646), followed by the XC40/EX40 with 173,890 units (2023: 200,670) and 108,621 XC90 sales (2023: 107,549).
