Electric cars: charging infrastructure continues to grow strongly
Current figures from the Federal Network Agency show that the number of public charging points for electric cars is rising sharply.

In many places in Germany, the charging infrastructure is now better than its reputation. New figures from the Federal Network Agency show how quickly the expansion is now progressing. According to the figures, there are a total of 161,686 public charging points across Germany as of February 1, 2025. The growth within one year is remarkable:
01.02.25 | 01.02.24 | Growth in per cent | |
Total | 161.686 | 133.088 | 21 |
Charging points >22 kW | 36.278 | 26.070 | 39 |
Charging points < 22 kW | 125.408 | 107.018 | 17 |
The cumulative nominal capacity of the charging facilities rose from 4.6 to 6.1 GW. EnBW continues to operate the largest network with 9086 charging points, well ahead of E.On (4396) and Tesla (3194). In percentage terms, the number of DC charging points in particular has grown over the past twelve months. The number of charging points with 59 to 149 kW rose by 39 percent to 2874, while the number of charging points with 149 to 299 kW increased by as much as 45 percent to 13,944. The increase in charging points with more than 299 kW was slightly higher again at 47 percent. Charging at this speed is now possible at 10,874 charging points in Germany.
Charging capacity is increasing
The average charging capacity is developing very differently from region to region. It is 24.6 kW in Berlin and 50.6 kW in Thuringia, while the average for all federal states rose from 36.3 in February 2024 to 39.4 kW a year later. Most public charging points are located in North Rhine-Westphalia (24,441) and Bavaria (24,343). As of February 2, 2025, there was only one district in Germany that had not registered a public charging point with the Federal Network Agency. The independent city of Eisenach is listed in the statistics with zero charging points. However, a quick cross-check with the EnBW app shows various charging options. We will submit the answer from the Federal Network Agency later.
