Electric cars: number of AC charging points rises to more than 100,000
The expansion of electric car charging infrastructure progresses, surpassing 100,000 AC charging points in Germany.

The number of electric cars registered for the first time has taken a dip following the discontinuation of state purchase subsidies in Germany. However, the charging infrastructure continues to grow, as figures from the Federal Network Agency show, which refer to March 1, 2024. According to these figures, there were a total of 128,517 charging points in Germany on this date. According to the Federal Network Agency, a total of 4.52 GW of charging capacity could be provided at the charging points.
103,226 of these were AC charging stations, 25,291 were DC columns. A look back shows just how much the expansion has picked up speed. A year earlier, there were 77,331 AC points and 15,555 DC points nationwide. That is an overall increase of 38 percent. The distribution of expansion and stock in the federal states is still very different. In percentage terms, Brandenburg (+72 percent) and Berlin (+62) were ahead in terms of expansion over the past twelve months. In Brandenburg, the number of charging points rose from 1856 to 3195, in Berlin from 2768 to 4477. Expansion made little progress in Hamburg. The number of charging points there rose by 14 percent from 2297 to 2627.
Three far ahead
Among the federal states, Bavaria (26,073 charging points), North Rhine-Westphalia (23,620) and Baden-Württemberg (22,910) lead by a clear margin. More than half of all charging points in Germany are located in these three federal states. The lowest number of charging stations is in Saarland (1035) and the city state of Bremen (895). In total, there were 7994 charging point operators nationwide on March 1, 2024. EnBW was the leader, followed by E.ON and Tesla.
