It's easy to lose track of the Volkswagen SUV models: Touareg, Tiguan, Taigo, T-Cross, T-Roc, not to mention other models from China or South America such as Taos or Terramont result from the drive to fill even small gaps. For a large car manufacturer like Volkswagen, however, this can still be worthwhile due to the high sales figures.

So now the Tayron, a 4.77-meter SUV with plenty of space and the promise of a higher level of comfort. It is intended to appeal to customers who find the VW Touareg too large and the VW Tiguan too compact. After all, the latter is 23 cm shorter. The name alone makes it clear that the Tayron is always a combustion engine and is also available as a plug-in hybrid on request. It is based on the MQB platform, which is identical to that of the VW Tiguan and one of the pillars of Volkswagen's model range.

The biggest difference to the Tiguan is its increased length with the option of getting the Tayron with seven seats. This also puts it in the position of a family car. Most customers in Europe will probably order it in the familiar five-seater configuration, with a load compartment that measures between an immense 885 and 2090 liters, depending on the seat configuration. Even as a seven-seater, it is still 345 liters. Unlike many electric SUVs, the Tayron with all-wheel drive offers a towing capacity of up to 2500 kg.

Diesel and petrol engines can be combined with all-wheel drive, while the hybrid versions continue to be driven solely via the front axle. The basic version is the Tayron 1.5 eTSI with 110 kW, all models have dual-clutch transmissions. As top models, Volkswagen offers a 142 kW diesel and a 195 kW petrol engine, both with all-wheel drive and seven-speed automatic transmission.

The two plug-in hybrids offer 150 or 200 kW system output and an electric range of up to 100 km with a net battery capacity of 19.7 kWh. It can be charged with up to 11 kW of alternating current and can accept up to 50 kW at DC fast-charging stations under ideal conditions. That's a lot for a PHEV and could motivate more frequent occasional charging.

Standard features include assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, cornering brake function, lane change assist, lane departure warning, emergency braking system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, park assist, traffic sign recognition and exit warning. Adaptive chassis control, HD–matrix headlights, assisted longitudinal and lateral guidance, voice assistant with AI integration, panoramic sunroof, a trailer coupling including maneuvering assistant and a 700-watt sound system from Harman-Kardon are offered as options.

The configuration for up to seven people leaves room for smaller children on shorter journeys in the third row of seats. At the front and in the second row, the seats can be optionally upgraded with electric controls, seat climate control and massage. In contrast to the electric ID. models, leather seats are also available for an extra charge.

The display and control units are familiar from other VW models. In addition to the digital instruments and the head-up display, the various functions as well as the navigation and sound system can be operated on the 15-inch display in the center of the dashboard. The numerous front and rear storage compartments are practical, although the use of hard plastic, particularly in the lower section of the trim, does not quite match the upmarket standard. The VW Tayron is now available to order in the "Life" equipment version with 110 kW mild hybrid from 45,475 euros; the official launch is scheduled for the "Mondial de l'Auto" from October 14 to 20 in Paris.
