Vision Pro: How to get suitable lenses from Zeiss in Germany
The Zeiss optical inserts are also coming to Germany. In contrast to the USA, the requirements are somewhat simpler. You can also check strengths in advance.

Spectacle and contact lens wearers who are interested in Apple's Vision Pro, which will finally be available in Germany from Friday (July 12), need so-called optical inserts for the device. They are manufactured by the supplier Zeiss. They have published further information on their website about how the process works.
The procedure has become somewhat easier compared to the USA, where a potentially expensive prescription from an ophthalmologist is required. In addition, Zeiss now offers a tool with which you can check whether your own values can even be processed into optical inserts, which is a great relief. However, the costs are rather unpleasant: instead of 150 US dollars plus tax, you pay 169 euros for prescription lenses in this country. A new light seal may also be required, which costs 219 euros in this country.
What Zeiss needs for a prescription
On the newly launched German-language Zeiss website for the optical inserts, there is much more detailed information than at Apple, where it confusingly states, among other things, that the glasses prescription must bear a license number and the prescriber's signature. Instead, Zeiss also accepts customer cards, spectacle passports, optician's invoices and "medical lens prescriptions or similar". Handwritten notes on paper, printouts from an autorefractometer and prescriptions from abroad are not valid. Anyone who does not have any values should contact an optician or ophthalmologist.
To order the optical inserts, go to the Apple website as usual. There you have to answer several standard questions (if you wear glasses, type of visual impairment, current size of the light seal) to finally end up with a head check via iPhone or iPad with Face ID, as is also known from the regular Vision Pro order. This determines whether you need a new light seal for the optical inserts. During our tests, the same new light seal size came up three times, once we were told we could keep the old one. Since Apple wants to see the aforementioned 219 euros for the component, it is better to repeat the process several times.
Pre-testing the strengths
The Zeiss website allows you to check the values before uploading your glasses pass, invoice or prescription during the ordering process. This prevents disappointment. For the sphere values, spheres from -12.50 to +6.75 are possible, for the cylinder a maximum of -4.50 to +4.50 cyl. Anyone suffering from severe astigmatism must therefore stay outside. For the axis, Zeiss accepts values between 0 and 178. Interestingly, it is also possible to specify an addition value, although this is intended for varifocals - at first it remained unclear what Zeiss does with these values.
The company emphasizes in a short FAQ that contact lens and workplace spectacle values are not accepted. The Zeiss Optical Inserts are to be manufactured and delivered within just under two weeks. As in the USA, the company first checks the values and then states whether they are accepted. Apple offers free engraving of the optical inserts to make them easier to distinguish.
