iPadOS more like macOS: Will version 19 finally bring improvements?
For years, professionals have been annoyed by the fact that Apple tablets are fast but too limited to use. iPadOS 19 could help – in part.
Stage Manager on the iPad: A start, but by no means enough.

Apple users have long complained that iPadOS can do significantly less than macOS. This became particularly clear last year with the iPad Pro M4, which Apple was the first device ever to be equipped with the new SoC. The full power of the chip cannot be used at all due to the operating deficits of iPadOS. This starts with the suboptimal window management of the operating system and does not end with the fact that there is still no real multitasking: For example, you can't switch to another app while Final Cut Pro for iPad is rendering a video. However, the rumor mill is giving some hope: iPadOS 19 is said to deliver more Mac-like innovations along with a redesign. This is reported by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.
An old dream – but not a Mac
According to him, Apple will focus on things like "productivity, multitasking and app window management" in the update –, all areas that long-time iPad users find lacking. The devices should therefore work "more like a Mac". "This has taken a really long time," says Gurman. "iPad power users have long wanted Apple to make the tablet more powerful."
According to Gurman, however, the old wish to make macOS tablet-capable is not (yet) coming true. "But the changes will probably go far enough to make many of these users happy – at least for now." It is surprising that Apple is only addressing this issue a year after the M4 was released. Presumably iPadOS 19 will be released together with new iPads that have an M5 processor for the first time – should Apple not bring the release forward. "For years, users have been saying that the iPad's hardware capabilities are so much more advanced than its software. That could change soon."

This can all be implemented without any problems
The interesting thing about the (delayed) development is that the technology is already here. The iPad is fast enough, allows the keyboard and trackpad to be connected and the screen comes with up to 12.9 inches. Only Apple's developers would rather not follow suit. They also want the hardware to remain easy to use with the fingers. This would simply not be possible with macOS.
Apple is also said to be working on a foldable at the same time, which will have 18.8 inches and could be released in 2026. However, it is still unclear whether this will be a Mac or an iPad.
