iPadOS 18: Still no macOS, but still with improvements
With the iPad Pro M4, Apple has released an extremely powerful tablet. However, it is held back by iPadOS. Version 18 only helps to a limited extent.

Apple also showed a new iPadOS version at its WWDC keynote. However, the update is less dramatic than iOS 18, for example. The hope that Apple could make iPadOS 18 as powerful as macOS - i.e. equip it with more desktop-like functions - was unfortunately disappointed. Apple has just released the iPad Pro M4 with its latest SoC to date, even before the Mac.
Free window control still not available
iPadOS 18 still does not offer the option of freely positioning app windows. The crutch of Stage Manager remains. Multitasking operation is also still limited; Apple did not provide any information on whether encoding in Final Cut Pro can still run in the background. On the other hand, iPadOS 18 has (almost) all the functions from iOS 18, including Apple Intelligence with generative functions for text and images.
Safari merges pages on request, the home screen can be adjusted more flexibly and there is a new tab bar that can float above the content. iWork apps (and Swift Playgrounds) get a new document browser.
Game mode, calculator, handwriting
The new password center called Apple Passwords is also coming to the iPad as a separate app. The game mode available on Mac and iPhone (with iOS 18) reaches the tablet, puts other apps into sleep mode and offers better latency (including wireless game controller). The Notes app copes better with handwritten text, which can also be edited freely. A dedicated AI model is designed to learn your handwriting and then automatically make it more beautiful. The Apple calculator finally reaches iPadOS, uses the full screen with a history on the left and can also be used for handwritten calculations.
Using "Math Notes" (also integrated in Notes), you can even solve equations with variables and dynamically update graphs. An Apple Pencil is required for everything written. iPadOS 18 is currently in beta testing and is scheduled for release in the fall. The iPad Pro M4, iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 11 (1st generation or later), iPad Air M2, iPad Air (3rd generation or later), standard iPad (7th generation or later) and iPad mini (5th generation or later) are supported.
