iPhone 16: Highest average selling price ever?
According to Counterpoint, Apple has never shipped so many iPhones in a third quarter. The sales price of the iPhone 16 was also excellent.

Apple had a good third quarter in 2024 – That much was already known. However, the company has not provided any specific sales figures for the iPhone for some time now, nor has it provided the average selling price (ASP). This information has now been provided by the market research company Counterpoint. Its latest Mobile Market Monitor, published this week, shows that Apple has apparently broken several records at once, even though the iPhone 16 with its four models was only released on September 20, i.e., shortly before the end of the quarter.
Users buy many Pro models
There had previously been speculation that Apple Intelligence could boost sales, at least in the USA, with Apple launching a new “iPhone Super Cycle”. This seems to have worked to some extent, although the most noticeable effects are likely to be felt in the fourth quarter, the figures for which Apple publishes at the end of January. As Counterpoint has now announced, Apple managed to deliver the most iPhones ever in a third quarter –, as indicated by the record sales communicated by Apple. Counterpoint also sees this for the iPhone. Furthermore, Apple has apparently succeeded in generating the highest ASP of all iPhone quarters to date. This means that never before has a single iPhone been as expensive to sell on average.

This is interesting because there have been no major price increases. In addition, all four iPhone 16 models support Apple Intelligence, but users still seem to be increasingly turning to the more expensive Pro models. (The iPhone 15, which was the latest series until September 20, had to be a Pro model for Apple Intelligence). To put this into perspective: The iPhone 16 Pro costs at least 1199 euros, while the iPhone 16 “only” costs 949 euros. The maximum you can pay for an iPhone 16 Pro Max with the highest configuration (1 TByte) at Apple is 1949 euros. Apple had already exceeded the €2000 mark once before with the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Overall market grows, Samsung leads the way
According to Counterpoint, the industry achieved slight growth in the overall market in the third quarter of 2024: total smartphone sales increased by two percent. Sales grew by ten percent overall, due to the – particularly iPhone-driven – higher overall ASP of seven percent. On average, smartphones have never been sold at such a high price, Counterpoint continues.
The leading manufacturer in the third quarter was Samsung. Its global market share amounted to 19 percent in terms of sales volume, according to Counterpoint. Apple followed in second place with 17 percent, followed by the Chinese companies Xiaomi (14 percent), Oppo and Vivo (both nine percent) and Motorla (five percent), which is as well now Chinese. Huawei does not appear in the list due to US sanctions.
