iPhone supply chain: Apple allegedly prefers Pro models

Apple has clearly differentiated between the standard and Pro models of its iPhone for several years now. In the iPhone 15, for example, the standard and Plus models have the SoC from the previous year, while only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max contain the latest chip (A17 Pro). According to the rumor mill, this should actually change in 2024 – also thanks to Apple Intelligence –: Both iPhone 16 and 16 Plus as well as iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro Max will receive the new A18, albeit in standard and Pro versions. Nevertheless, Apple assumes that the Pro models will remain the most important new smartphones this year. The company is said to have informed its suppliers of this.
Pro share grows by 7 percent
According to the South Korean electronics trade journal The Elec, Apple will produce a total of 90.1 million new iPhones this year. This is the assumption of Apple's suppliers. This means that only 27 percent of standard models will be built (around 24.5 million units), with the Plus model accounting for a further 6 percent (5.8 million). Pro and Pro Max, on the other hand, account for 59.8 million devices, together 67 percent.
The Pro Max is said to be the most frequently built iPhone 16 with 33.2 million units and 37 percent of the total, followed by the iPhone 16 Pro with 26.6 million units and a 30 percent share. Whisper figures from last year indicate that Apple only had 60 percent of Pro models built for the iPhone 15 –. Surprisingly, the company assumes that sales will shift even more towards the more expensive models.
Extras in the Pro models attract customers
As mentioned, all iPhone 16 models will be compatible with Apple Intelligence – including more RAM for the standard devices. The action button will also be added to the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. However, the cameras and the overall speed of the Pro models remain better. For example, the ultra-wide-angle camera is to be equipped with 48 megapixels for the first time, a new "Capture" button for photography and video has been added and a new 5x zoom for the iPhone 16 Pro has been added.
There will also be a slightly different form factor with slightly larger screens, which will only be available on the Pro models. Apple plans to build up to 70 percent of the iPhone 16 series this year. The company has mainly hired well-known suppliers for components, writes The Elec.
