"iPhone 17 Air": Thinner than the iPhone 6?
Fresh rumors have surfaced about the new "Air" iPhone planned for next year. There are also details about the SoC that may be installed.

After several years, the iPhone is getting a different form factor – at least for one model. The rumor mill has been predicting this for months. The "iPhone 17 Air" or "iPhone 17 Slim" could replace the previous Plus model, which had previously replaced the iPhone 13 mini. At the same time, however, there will still be iPhone Pro models from Apple. Further details about the "iPhone 17 Air" have now emerged, focusing on its case thickness, which is said to be the outstanding feature of the new device.
Comparable models went down to 6.9 mm
While the well-known leaker/news aggregator yeux11222 from Korea initially said last week that the "iPhone 17 Air" would be "less thin than Apple had planned", an analyst now claims that the manufacturer will at least succeed in producing the "thinnest iPhone ever". The comparison model is the iPhone 6 from 2014, which Apple has not yet beaten. This had a thickness of 6.9 mm. For comparison: the iPhone 6 Plus (also 2014) was 7.1 mm and the iPhone 5S (2013) was 7.6 mm.

Apple has now reached 7.8 mm for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, while the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are a good deal thicker at 8.25 mm. According to yeux1122, Apple has now arrived at a "technical compromise" for the "iPhone 17 Air" due to technical problems, particularly in the production of the battery substrate. It is therefore "not much thinner" than the iPhone 6. However, it would be surprising that such difficulties requiring a redesign arise so relatively late in the development process – Apple plans new models years in advance –.
Not as thin as the iPad Pro M4
With the iPad Pro M4, which beat the iPod nano as the thinnest Apple device ever, Apple achieved a thickness of 5.1 mm. Analyst Jeff Pu from the Hong Kong investment firm Haitong now writes in a report to investors that he assumes a thickness of "around 6 mm" for the "iPhone 17 Air" aka "iPhone 17 Slim". "We share the latest whisper data," he said.
This would still make the new model the thinnest iPhone of all time and about three quarters as thick as the current iPhone 16 Pro models. There would obviously not be enough space in the case for iPad Pro M4 dimensions. The thin iPhone is said to be less well equipped internally than the Pro models, with an A19 processor and probably a 6.6-inch display. There is allegedly only a 48-megapixel camera on the back. According to Pu, the A19 and A19 Pro SoCs in the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro are manufactured in a new N3P process by TSMC – a third-generation 3 nm processor.
