If you look at the registration figures for the Hyundai Group's major models with its Hyundai, Genesis and Kia brands on the domestic market, you could quickly come to the wrong conclusion: If the Koreans were to stop production, hardly anyone would notice. But the German market is of course by no means representative of the rest of the world. This is why Hyundai is launching its own offspring of the Kia EV9, the Ioniq 9, even though only just under 1,200 EV9s were newly registered in Germany in the first ten months of this year.

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 has an independent design, but is just as bulky as the EV9. At 5.06 m in length, it is even a few centimeters longer than the Kia. The wheelbase measures 3.13 m. Customers can choose from various seating configurations, including the one shown in the first press photos with four individual seats in the second and third rows. Those who leave it at five seats will have a huge amount of space for people and luggage, as in the EV9. Given the amount of space required, this is what you can expect. There is also a frunk at the front, which offers between 52 and 88 liters.

Operation is essentially via the large display in the middle or via voice commands. Basic functions such as temperature or volume have their own controls. Hyundai has also dispensed with touch surfaces on the steering wheel, which reinforces the impression that the developers have made an effort to make everyday functions as easy to operate as possible.

The Ioniq 9 is being launched exclusively with battery-electric drive. With an energy content of 110 kWh, the battery has even more to offer than in the EV9. It can be charged with up to 260 kW under ideal conditions. Thanks to preconditioning, this can also be used in winter after a certain amount of travel time, provided the local charging infrastructure can keep up. The maximum range under WLTP conditions is 620 km.

The Ioniq 9 is available with three drive systems. The base model with a motor in the rear offers 160 kW. All versions have this electric motor. In the all-wheel drive models, either a 70 kW motor or one with 160 kW is added at the front. The system output is then 230 or 320 kW. All versions are limited to 200 km/h.

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 will be launched in the USA and South Korea at the beginning of next year. It is not yet clear exactly when the large car will be available on the European market. We expect it to be launched in the first half of the year, although Europe plays a subordinate role in the considerations for the reasons mentioned above. Finally, the price also stands in the way of widespread distribution. Hyundai is not yet revealing any details in this regard, but the base model can be expected to cost around 70,000 euros. There is undoubtedly a lot of car for the money, but this much of both has only a limited target group in Europe.
