The expansion of the charging infrastructure in Germany is developing well for e-car drivers. As of December 1, 2024, the Federal Network Agency reports 154,037 public charging points across Germany. The number of AC charging points with up to 22 kW continues to rise strongly. There were 101,638 a year ago, 114,794 on September 1, 2024, and now there are 120,618. The number of charging points with more than 22 kW rose from 24,095 a year ago to 33,419 at the beginning of December 2024.
What is being expanded?
There are currently 11,362 operators of public charging points. The two largest are EnBW (8392) and E.ON (4277), followed by Tesla (3013) and Mercedes (2619). EWE Go follows with 2288 public charging points. In percentage terms, the number of charging points with more than 299 kW – grew the most, increasing by 49 percent to 9957. Among the DC charging stations, the number of stations capable of delivering between 149 and 299 kW remains unchanged at 12,667. The increase here was 40 percent.
Even charging stations with 49 to 149 kW are still being expanded. In view of cars such as the Porsche Taycan, anyone who wonders why investments are still being made in such stations is in danger of overlooking the fact that there are also a number of electric cars that have just been launched that can charge with less than 150 kW at their peak. The Kia EV3 (up to 125 kW) and Mini Countryman SE (up to 130 kW) are two current examples of this.

Regional differences
Regionally, the large federal states are obviously still ahead in terms of the number of charging points. This applies not only to the existing stock, but also to expansion. In other words: In North Rhine-Westphalia, more new charging points were installed within a year than are on the grid in total in states such as Schleswig-Holstein or Saxony.
