As expected, the European Football Championships, the Olympic Games and a strike in Hollywood have left their mark on the number of visitors to German cinemas.

Cinemas in Germany sold a total of 90.1 million tickets in the 2024 calendar year, according to the German Federal Film Board (FFA). This decline of 5.8 percent compared to the previous year was to be expected due to the major sporting events of the European Football Championships and the Olympic Games, explains FFA Executive Director Peter Dinges. However, the actors' strike in Hollywood also contributed to the moderate decline according to the FFA.

With “Die Schule der magischen Tiere 3” and “Chantal im Märchenland”, two German productions are in fifth and sixth place of the ten films for which the most tickets were sold in Germany. The Disney-Pixar film “Inside Out 2” leads this list by some distance.

The market share of German films fell from 24.3 percent to 20.6 percent. This is also because no major international productions were released in 2024 that were filmed in Germany. In 2023, for example, “John Wick” and “The Hunger Games” were still released in cinemas, both of which contained scenes filmed in Berlin.

The number of cinemas in Germany has also fallen slightly. The number fell by 1.3 percent, but according to Peter Dinges, this is not an alarm signal. In addition, small cinemas with up to three screens recorded an average of four percent more ticket sales and those with more than four screens eight percent fewer. According to Dinges, this is due to the lower number of blockbusters released in 2024. For 2025, however, more major titles such as “Avatar 3”, the “A Minecraft Movie” and “Kanu des Manitu” are expected.
