Stellantis announces autonomous driving at SAE level 3. The system, called "STLA AutoDrive", is designed to handle automated driving at speeds of up to 60 km/h and provide the basis for SAE levels 2 to 95 km/h as well as a new function for driving off-road. Highly automated driving at level 3 means that the person behind the wheel can temporarily turn their attention to other activities such as writing e-mails or reading a book under precisely defined conditions. However, they must be ready to take control of the car at any time if they are asked to take back control.
"Making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable"
According to Stellantis, STLA is designed to "improve the driving experience by managing routine driving tasks and make time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable." When traffic and environmental conditions allow, STLA AutoDrive will signal its readiness. As soon as it is armed by a physical (!) button, it steers the car, maintains safe distances and continuously adjusts distance and speed.

)It can be assumed that lidar sensors are used to achieve reliable detection of the surroundings even at night or in difficult weather conditions such as rain or snowfall. However, Stellantis has not yet published any details on this. According to the manufacturer, this includes an automated sensor cleaning system, as is also standard. According to the manufacturer, SAE level 2 is available above 65 km/h, i.e. adaptive cruise control plus lane center guidance, but only as long as the person at the wheel also has their hands on the steering wheel, or SAE level 2+, with eyes on the road and no hands on the wheel.

Continuous improvement possible
Stellantis promises to be able to make innovations and improvements available at any time as over-the-air updates and real-time data integration. The next goals include driving at SAE level 3 at higher speeds of up to 95 km/h, as Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to be permitted to do in mid-December, as well as an improved capability for autonomous off-road driving for suitable models. Germany has permitted speeds of up to 130 km/h for around two years.
STLA AutoDrive is initially only in the shop window. Stellantis has not yet announced which of its numerous brands, from Jeep to Citroën and Opel, will initially receive the system. The first pictures only show it in a Jeep.
