Aqara camera with hub: HomeKit Secure Video with PoE and Quad HD
Wi-Fi cameras can potentially be shot from the network, which is why Ethernet cameras are more secure. Aqara now provides one for HomeKit Secure Video.

The smart home accessory specialist Aqara from China has a new camera model on offer that combines interesting features for Apple users. The Camera Hub G5 Pro combines video recording capabilities including HomeKit Secure Video with the option of connecting the camera to the home network via Ethernet – and even supplying it with power via PoE (Power over Ethernet), which reduces cable clutter. The device – can also be used as a Thread Border Router or Matter Controller, as the name "Hub" suggests –.
Color for night vision
The Camera Hub G5 Pro comes in white and gray as well as a WLAN and PoE version. The Wi-Fi version has no Ethernet connectivity (and therefore of course no PoE), but costs 20 euros less (179.99 euros instead of 199.99 euros). The "Quad HD" sensor achieves a resolution of 2.6K (4 megapixels or 1520p) and is said to provide clear night vision ("True Color Night Vision") in color.

An integrated NPU (Neural Processing Unit, AI chip) should be able to better recognize objects and sounds. If you don't want to use HomeKit Secure Video, which requires an iCloud+ subscription, you can also activate RTSP for local streaming (including NAS support). The camera is designed for indoor and outdoor use. As an alternative to HomeKit Secure Video, users can also upload videos to Aqara's cloud. In terms of Wi-Fi, the G5 Pro Hub supports dual-band radio (2.5 and 5 GHz). The field of view is 133 degrees.
Advantages of Ethernet instead of WLAN
Many surveillance cameras are connected to the home router via Wi-Fi. This can be a problem because thieves now work with so-called jammers that block the radio spectrum. This means that a WLAN camera may not sound the alarm. Cameras in security-critical areas are therefore better connected via cable.
However, there is only a small selection for HomeKit Secure Video. In addition to the Camera Hub G5 Pro, this also includes the Smart Indoor Camera from Netatmo. However, despite regular updates, – – is technically completely outdated. It also does not support PoE. A newer model, the Indoor Advance Camera, even has PoE, but does not support HomeKit Secure Video.
