Control Center: Apple tries to make Apple Intelligence appealing to users
Apple has been reactivating its AI system automatically since iOS 18.3.1. With iOS 18.4, integration into the operating system will be even closer.

Apple obviously wants users to use its AI system, Apple Intelligence, even if it is far from perfect. As testers of the second developer beta of iOS 18.4 report, integration will be further strengthened with the update. For the first time, there are icons for central Apple Intelligence functions in the Control Center. The AI system is currently only available in English, but will also be available in German in April.
Apple Intelligence costs storage space
With iOS 18.3.1, the AI system had already switched itself back on automatically if users had previously turned it off – but not for all users. This can cause problems, as Apple Intelligence takes up a lot of storage space for its models – It should be at least 4 GB. There is no way to turn this off when Apple Intelligence is active, as the LLMs and image generators are part of the operating system: If the AI system is active, they are downloaded.

In iOS 18.4 Beta 2, at least three Apple Intelligence functions can now be called up directly from the Control Center: “Talk to Siri” (to ask Siri questions, which can also be done using the side button), “Type to Siri” (to type questions to Siri) and Visual Intelligence. The latter function allows you to take photos and then have them analyzed by AI, with Apple (also) getting help from Google.
Visual Intelligence for the iPhone 15 Pro
iOS 18.4 also brings Visual Intelligence to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. The function was initially only available on the iPhone 16 models, as Apple had combined it with the Camera Control button (camera control). With the iPhone 16e, the feature was also brought to the action button.
In the second beta of iOS 18.4, this is now also possible on the 15 Pro models. As mentioned, VIsual Intelligence can also be accessed via the Control Center. Among other things, the service can translate photographed texts, read them aloud, search Google for objects you have seen or identify them directly – via ChatGPT if necessary. Visual Intelligence is available with iOS 18.4 on all Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones, i.e., all five 16 series models plus the 15 series Pro devices.
