As part of the current beta test of iOS 18.4, Apple has once again modified its popular Photos app. This had been significantly revised as part of iOS 18, which not all users liked (Tips for the update). The new features are also likely to end up in the final version of iOS 18.4, which is expected by April.
Better filtering – also more unusual use cases
Apple has worked on the sorting options. In the future, it will be possible to search by date modified in the album view, which is particularly helpful if you frequently edit images. In addition, the view names have been revised, which should make them easier to understand (initially in English).

In the filters, you can now use the context menu to directly find photos and videos that have been shared with the user. You can also select photos that are not yet in an album – very practical if you want to tidy up your photo collection. You can also use the menu to display only albums or folders.
Hide more albums and delete them faster
Apple has also made some tweaks to data protection and privacy. You can now hide the albums with recently viewed or recently shared photos and videos by default – and not just the hidden albums.
Apple has also improved deleting and restoring images. Instead of sorting pictures and videos individually, there is a new “Delete all” button. Conversely, you can restore all images in the trash can at the touch of a button. It is surprising that the feature is only available now.
Apple is capable of learning with the Photos app
All in all, the new functions show that Apple is continuing to work on the Photos app and is willing to improve it. Initially, there was massive criticism of the new interface, as it differs greatly from the old one, at least at first glance, and is much less “straightforward”. It remains to be seen whether Apple will work on further photos functions – iOS 18.5 is probably planned for May.
