iPhone 17 Pro: But no (completely) new look – Major redesign not until 2027

Apple is apparently not planning any major design changes for the iPhone 17 Pro. This is the assumption of Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. In his newsletter on Sunday , he writes that the new model will “look much more like the 16 Pro than previously thought”. This means that the form factor that Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020 and which has only received minor tweaks since then – for example in the colors, the use of titanium for the housing (from 15 Pro) or the addition of the camera control (16 Pro), will remain the same.
Camera block in the style of the Pixel?
While the thinner iPhone 17 Air should already stand out from this year's line-up due to its dimensions, the 17 Pro is likely to be recognized above all by the changes to the camera, according to the report. According to the report, an entire “camera block” is planned, which stretches across the width of the housing and is somewhat reminiscent of Google's Pixel. However, the arrangement of the three image sensors will not change. According to Gurman, render images showing that the iPhone 17 Pro contains a colored camera block (e.g., in black) are incorrect. It should be a tone-on-tone design. It remains a gradual design change, as we know it from Apple.

Otherwise, the 17 Pro is expected to feature improvements to the camera, possibly changes to the zoom levels and 8K video recording for the first time. A new SoC promises (slightly) more speed. Apple is reportedly planning a return to aluminum for the housing – a material that was previously only used in the standard and Plus models. According to a report from last autumn, it will be a combination of the aforementioned aluminum and glass, both of which together promise greater durability. Before the introduction of titanium as a housing material, Apple had made the frames of the Pro models from steel.
Major redesign only with iPhone 19
According to Gurman, Apple does not want to touch the design of the iPhone more strongly until the iPhone 19 (which may have a different name – there was no iPhone 9), which will be released for the 20th anniversary of the smartphone in 2027. In addition to a – then presumably second – variant of the long-awaited foldable, Apple will implement a “bold new Pro model”, which will then make “more use of glass”.
This is an old dream at Apple: an iPhone that consists almost entirely of the amorphous solid – albeit in a particularly hard form –. Former head of design Jony Ive also had such a vision for the Apple Watch, but was unable to realize it during his time at Apple.
