Anyone currently experiencing problems with Apple's iPhone-car integration CarPlay should urgently install the latest iOS update. With iOS 18.4.1, which was released last week, Apple not only delivers an important security-critical patch from – whose fixed gap has already been attacked – but also fixes difficulties in the car that have occurred since the release of iOS 18.4 in March.
Display simply gone
The issues manifested themselves in the fact that iOS was no longer able to contact the car entertainment system in certain vehicles. The vehicles affected included Audis, Nissans, VWs and Mazdas – although not all models were affected. What the issues had in common was that the vehicles usually (also) had the option of displaying CarPlay displays in the instrument cluster or using Wireless CarPlay, i.e., a wireless connection to the iPhone without a USB-C and/or Lightning cable.

Apple had never officially commented on the problem, but wrote in the release notes of iOS 18.4.1 that this “fixes a rare issue that prevents Wireless CarPlay in certain vehicles”. It is currently still unclear whether there will also be a fix for users who have had similar issues with cable connections, although these are said to have occurred comparatively rarely. In some cases, deleting the connection completely and reconfiguring it helped meanwhile.
Actually, long beta phase
The CarPlay bug was not noticed during the long beta phase of iOS 18.4; it was only with the public release that user complaints arose. Unfortunately, this has been happening more frequently recently – also under macOS. Apple now conducts large beta phases with both developers and the public (as part of the Public Beta Program). Users are encouraged to report issues via a feedback wizard, although there are rarely any follow-up questions and/or information when a problem has been fixed.
As mentioned, users who have the aforementioned issue with CarPlay should simply update their iPhone to iOS 18.4.1. If issues persist after this, it is recommended to delete the CarPlay connection (if possible, both on the iPhone and in the car) and then reconfigure it. iOS 18.4 also brings some positive aspects for CarPlay, including – more icons on one screen, depending on the screen – which can reduce the need to scroll.
