Mazda is represented in Germany with a dense SUV range. It remains to be seen exactly where the EX-60 presented at Auto Shanghai might fit in. There are some overlaps with the CX-60 in terms of size and drive system, and the latter will almost certainly not be taken off the market. Mazda is not giving much away yet, but a few things were already revealed at the show.

At 4.85 m long, 1.94 m wide and 1.62 m high, the EX-60 SUV is similarly voluminous to the CX-60. In terms of design, it takes up the style of the recently presented 6e, which is a clever further development of the previous design – and not a radical break. Initial images show a huge glass roof in the SUV, as in the saloon, which cannot be opened. The interior features a 26.5-inch display that extends into the area in front of the front passenger. Mazda distributes plenty of loudspeakers, including in the headrests. This should also allow the driver and co-pilot to listen to different types of music. Perhaps they will also listen to a podcast on the subject of "invented problems and their solutions".

The EX-60 has only been explicitly announced for the Chinese market at the moment, although an export to Europe, at least as an electric car, is obvious. In China, the SUV is to be offered as a plug-in hybrid and with a battery-electric drive. Performance data is not yet available, only the range in the Chinese CLTC consumption cycle has already been revealed: The E-SUV is expected to manage 600 km, the PHEV 1000 km. Lower values are to be expected in the WLTP used in this country.

In any case, the Mazda EX-60 will have no shortage of competition, regardless of the markets in which it is ultimately offered. By European standards, it is already quite generously dimensioned, with models up to a maximum length of around 4.6 m currently achieving the largest unit numbers. In this segment, the successor to the Mazda CX-5 will be much more important for the European market than an EX-60. The brand intends to reveal this summer what the future holds for this model. We expect it to be in dealerships by next year at the latest.

The form in which the EX-60 could also be offered in Europe has not yet been clarified. However, an export, at least as an electric car, is very likely.

Ultimately, the EX-60 will not only have to face the recently revised Tesla Model Y, but also competitors such as the Audi Q6 e-tron or the upcoming SUV offshoot of the New Class from BMW. And these are just a few competitors from Europe. In China, Mazda will have to deal with countless e-SUVs of this size. With this in mind, it will be exciting to see how Mazda will position the EX-60.
