To increase sales of electric cars, VW has been granting considerable discounts of between 3500 and 6000 euros for some time now. The campaign was actually limited until the end of June, but is now being extended. The purchase incentive will be available until the end of September, as VW communicates on this website.

Last year, Volkswagen was in third place globally for new registrations of electric cars – far behind BYD and Tesla. On the German market, however, the Group dominates the top 10 best-selling e-cars at present. This is probably also thanks to the purchase premium. It has caused entry-level prices to fall, in some cases significantly. An ID.3 Pure is still available from 29,830 euros, an ID.4 from 35,835 and an ID.7 from 48,995  euros. These are attractive prices in their respective environments.

VW is achieving two things with this campaign. On the one hand, it improves the capacity utilization of the plants, and on the other, the Group comes closer to fleet limits. If a manufacturer exceeds its individual EU consumption targets, it faces high penalties – per new car sold in the EU in the reference year, regardless of whether the car has complied with the limit value or not. Electric cars help manufacturers to reduce average CO₂ emissions.

Volkswagen will have carefully considered whether the discounts are still necessary. After all, they cut into the company's margin, even though VW repeatedly argues that it actually earns money with its e-cars. The ID models are therefore not cross-subsidized. As a result, the discount must obviously pay off economically for VW. It is uncertain whether the campaign will continue in the fourth quarter of 2025. For VW, it depends on the development of registration figures and fleet consumption.
