After the "200 million job": Meta AI recruits more Apple AI employees
Mark Zuckerberg is still looking for AI experts to develop a "superintelligence". Now more Apple employees are joining Meta.

Facebook operator Meta has succeeded in poaching further employees from Apple's AI department. Following the spectacular takeover of the person responsible for the basic model for allegedly up to 200 million US dollars (to be paid over several years and primarily in Meta shares), these would now be Apple employees number two and three that Meta has been able to attract.
“Super intelligence” from Meta
According to a report by the financial news agency Bloomberg, these are direct employees of Ruoming Pang, the head of Apple's language models, whom Meta acquired earlier this month for the aforementioned 200 million dollars. Mark Lee and Tom Gunter are now also said to work in Meta's “Superintelligence Lab,” which CEO Mark Zuckerberg had set up to build a general artificial intelligence, a “superintelligence.”

Lee is said to have already started at Meta, with Gunter to follow “in the near future,” according to informed sources. Both ex-Apple employees are said to have worked closely with Pang. Lee was apparently Pang's first employee at Apple, whom he had hired himself, while Gunter was a “Distinguished Engineer” at Apple who was one of the high-ranking experts in the team.
Uncertainty at Apple
Gunter apparently came to Meta via a detour: After leaving his post at Apple, he went to another AI company before now joining Meta. In Apple's AI department, which is responsible for Apple Intelligence, the recruitment successes of Meta are apparently causing uncertainty. All three employees were part of the so-called Apple Foundation Model team, which is intended to drive forward Apple's in-house Large Language Models –, an area where Apple is behind the competition according to industry estimates. The technology should also finally make the voice assistant Siri better.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is increasingly considering relying on basic models from other providers. ChatGPT can already be used in Apple Intelligence if desired, but Apple is apparently also interested in Claude from Anthropic. The iPhone manufacturer is said to have started to increase the wages (or share awards) of its AI team to keep them. Around 100 people are currently still working there, according to reports. How much money Gunter and Lee will receive from Meta has not been leaked. According to reports, Meta wants to invest hundreds of billions in “superintelligence”. The key AI employees reportedly have their desks very close to Zuckerberg. According to his statements, he wants to create an “elite team with the highest talent density in the industry.”
