After the Californian brand Zero had exclusively built motorcycles for 18 years, their first scooter, the LS1, is now entering the market. Unlike many start-ups and young electric brands, the LS1 can be assumed to have mature technology. Since the electric motorcycle market is simply not gaining traction, but millions of electric scooters are sold, especially in Asia, the LS1 is a sensible step for Zero.
Elegant Design
The LS1's design captivates with smooth surfaces, appearing elegant and distinctive. The front slopes down from the handlebars to the small LED spot at a 45-degree angle, above which a wide LED daytime running light strip spans. The rear also features closed surfaces. A thick seat promises high comfort. The five-inch TFT display can be paired with a smartphone and shows a lot of information, though some of it is quite tiny. The rider sits at a height of 780 mm and has to handle a curb weight of 132 kg.

)Decent Comfort
The LS1 rolls on a 14-inch wheel at the front and a 13-inch wheel at the rear, providing the necessary stability in straight-line running, as the Zero reaches a top speed of 100 km/h. Handling should remain agile with a wheelbase of 1330 mm and a trail of 90 mm. The suspension travel is 109 mm at the front and 104 mm at the rear – decent values in the scooter segment that promise good comfort.

ABS and Traction Control
The LS1 is braked by disc brakes with a floating dual-piston caliper at the front wheel and a single-piston caliper at the rear. The LS1 features ABS, not just a combined braking system like many other A1-class scooters. Zero goes a step further and equips its scooter with traction control. The LS1 is powered by a conveniently centrally mounted 8.4 kW electric motor, which generates a maximum torque of 240 Nm at the rear wheel via a toothed belt.
Optional Third Battery
The two removable batteries are hidden in the floor of the footboard and together supply 3.72 kWh of electricity. Thanks to an integrated charger, they can be charged on the street or removed and charged at an outlet at home.

Zero
)Zero states the minimum charging time from zero to 90 percent is 4.5 hours. The optional fast charger can shorten this time to 2.6 hours at best. When you flip up the seat, a large storage space opens up, which can also be used to extend the range: the connection for an optional third battery is already pre-installed there. The storage space is large enough to even fit a helmet. With two batteries, Zero states a range of 115 km for combined city/highway driving at a maximum of 89 km/h. With three batteries, the manufacturer's specification increases to 166 km, and 173 km in pure city driving.
Torque Pulses Against Pickpockets
Zero has come up with several measures against theft. A mechanical steering lock represents the first line of defense. After ten seconds, or as soon as the remote key is out of range, the scooter automatically locks. This is already known in this form. The following feature is new: every attempt to move the LS1 triggers the motor with torque pulses that block the rear wheel for five seconds each. This process repeats every three meters of movement to deter thieves.

Fair Price
The LS1 can be ridden with driver's license class A1 or B196, thus also opening up the possibility for car drivers to commute emission-free on two wheels without having to take a motorcycle driving test. Zero offers the LS1 starting at 5185 Euros in the "White Pearl" and "Dark Silver" paint finishes. For an electric scooter that reaches 100 km/h and offers good equipment, such as the significantly more expensive Govecs Schwalbe (Test), this is a fair price. The Zero LS1 can already be reserved via the homepage with a deposit of 100 Euros. Zero will announce a delivery date soon.
