Sony Honda Mobility's (SHM) first electric car is expected to hit the market in the foreseeable future. The Japanese company announced this at the CES electronics trade show. A second model is also already in the works.
Afeela 1 was presented at CES last year. This year, the Japanese are presenting a pre-production model of the electric car, which looks very similar to last year's concept.
Honda began test production at its plant in East Liberty, Ohio, in the fall, SHM announced. Preparations for the start of series production are currently underway. SHM plans to deliver the first vehicles this year.
Customers in California will be the first to receive the vehicles. In 2027, SHM also plans to deliver to Arizona and Japan. Japan is planned for the first half of the year.
Electric sedan with all-wheel drive
Afeela 1 is a 4.9-meter-long sedan with a coupé rear. It is powered by two motors, each with an output of 180 kilowatts on the front and rear axles. The driving power is supplied by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 91 kilowatt-hours. The vehicle is expected to travel about 480 kilometers on a single charge. Charging is done at a maximum of 150 kilowatts.
The vehicle is equipped with 40 sensors, including cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, as well as lidar. This is intended to enable the car to drive autonomously (Level 3). Additionally, a Playstation 5 is integrated into the car.
SHM offers the Afeela 1 in two variants: Signature for a base price of $103,000 and Origin for $90,000. The differences between them are not yet known. The manufacturer plans to deliver the more expensive variant first, at the end of this year. Origin is scheduled to follow in early 2027.
