BMW Recall: Defective Starter Can Cause Fire
BMW has to recall a range of models again. A defective magnetic switch can, in the worst case, trigger a fire.
The BMW 5 Series generation, built between 2017 and 2024, is among those affected.

Numerous BMW model lines are affected by a current recall. Internal checks revealed that in a very high number of start-up attempts, metal abrasion can occur in the starter's magnetic switch in some models, which can lead to short circuits and thus overheating. In the worst case, a fire can occur. BMW recommends not leaving affected cars unattended after starting.
Vehicles that had a starter relay retrofitted or a starter from this period installed between July 2020 and July 2022 are impacted, writes ADAC. Nationwide, this impacts almost 28,600 vehicles. Owners can check if their car is impacted by the recall using their vehicle identification number on this BMW page. Internally, the recall at BMW is managed under the following numbers:

The current recall has not yet been registered in the Federal Motor Transport Authority database; we will provide the corresponding number later. As of today, some model years of the following model lines are affected:
- 2 Series (internal G42, on sale since 2021)
- 3 Series (G20 and G21, on sale since 2019)
- 4 Series (G22, G23 and G26, since 2020)
- 5 Series (G30 and G31, built 2017 to 2024)
- 6 Series (G32, built 2017 to 2023)
- 7 Series (G11 and G12, 2015 to 2022)
- X3 (G01, 2017 to 2025)
- X4 (G02, 2018 to 2025)
- X5 (G05, since 2018)
- X6 (G06, since 2019)
- Z4 (G29, since 2018)
