Mercedes CLA: Additional version with 71 kWh battery

Economically, the Mercedes-Benz brand is currently in rough waters. Profit and revenue have fallen drastically again in the past year. Those responsible hope to be more successful with the next push towards electromobility than with previous attempts. With the GLB EQ, GLC EQ, and CLA, the chance should be there. The latter is getting an additional version between the base model CLA 200 and the previous CLA 250+ level.

Engine identical for CLA 250 and CLA 250+

The new CLA 250 gets the same powertrain as the model with the Plus in its name. The rear engine produces 200 kW and offers a maximum torque of 335 Nm. Driving performance is also identical: top speed is 210 km/h, and the sedan completes the standard sprint in 6.7 seconds. Currently, this powertrain is only available in the sedan in the configurator, but we expect Mercedes to also offer this version in the Shooting Brake later.

Charging: slightly less fast

Significant changes have been made around the battery. Its net energy content of 71 kWh is expected to provide a range of 674 km according to WLTP, with the brand stating a consumption of 12.3 kWh in the cycle. Charging power is slightly lower at 250 kW. For charging from 10 to 80 percent, Mercedes states a time of 20 minutes. This calculates to an average net charging power of 149 kW in this range. Those who want to use DC chargers with 400 Volt will have to pay 655 euros. This also applies to the option of charging with alternating current up to 22 kW. A three-phase 11-kW AC charger is standard.

The base price of the CLA 250 is 52,872 euros, which is just under 3500 euros more than the base model with 58 kWh (CLA 200) and almost 2900 euros less than the CLA 250+. With comparable engine power, the Shooting Brake has so far cost about 1400 euros more. If this remains the case, the station wagon variant with this battery would be available for around 54,000 euros.
