With 51,729 electric car models worldwide, Mercedes-Benz EQA and EQB must have their traction batteries replaced due to fire hazard. The Federal Motor Vehicle Transport Authority has issued a corresponding recall for Germany with the internal number 16136R.

In Germany, 4677 Mercedes-Benz EQA 250+ and EQB 250+ models from the production period of February 20, 2021, to July 30, 2024, inclusive, are affected. All these cars of the 243 series have been equipped from the factory with a 70.5 kWh battery from the Chinese supplier Farasis. Mercedes-Benz cites the risk of an internal short circuit with the possible consequences of overheating and fire hazard as the reason for this safety measure.

Since the batteries cannot all be replaced immediately, the affected vehicles should not be charged above 80 percent and should only be parked outdoors. Previously, Mercedes-Benz had already reduced the battery capacity using a software update as a safety measure.

The replacement with a safe battery, which is expected to take a full working day net, should bring the vehicles technically up to the state they were delivered in, i.e., without the temporary virtual restriction.
