The charging infrastructure in Germany has been better than its reputation for some time in terms of numbers. According to the Federal Network Agency, there were 196,353 public charging points nationwide as of February 1, 2026. 146,449 of these offer a maximum charging capacity of 22 kW and are referred to as standard charging points. 49,904 charging points offer more than 22 kW. As a rule, these are DC charging points, but there are still a few AC charging points with 43 kW that also count towards these fast charging points.

Within a year, the number of AC charging points increased by 13 percent; on February 1, 2025, there were only 130,123. Charging points with up to 22 kW are widespread because they only require connection to the densely meshed low-voltage grid. This is cheaper than connection to the medium-voltage grid, which is necessary for the faster DC charging points. The number of charging facilities with 15 to 22 kW alone increased by around 13,000 within a year to now 109,077. It is a pity that many new cars can still not fully utilize this 22 kW. Models from the Volkswagen Group or Stellantis, for example, can usually only charge at 11 kW on alternating current.

The number of DC charging points increased by 34 percent from 37,350 in February of last year. Charging points with at least 150 kW now clearly dominate. The Federal Network Agency reports 19,230 (plus 33 percent) charging points with charging capacities between 150 and 299 kW and 17,049 (plus 44 percent) charging points with at least 300 kW in Germany. The latter is necessary, as several models have come onto the market in the past year that can charge at over 300 kW at peak. In the editorial office, an Xpeng G9 currently holds the record, which was able to fully utilize a column with 400 kW – without reaching its maximum charging capacity.

Among the providers, there is a race for third place between BP (2990 charging points), EWE Go (3362) and Tesla (3665). E.ON is already somewhat ahead in second place with 4715, but is far behind the market leader EnBW, which offers 11,608 charging points in Germany. Incidentally, progress is not being made everywhere with the charging infrastructure in Germany. The number of public AC charging points with standard Schuko plugs decreased from 4110 to 3989 within twelve months. Those who want to charge an e-car with a CHAdeMO connection publicly also have fewer options than a year ago. Instead of 3567, there were only 3372 recently.
